INTERNATIONAL RESEARCH PROGRAM FOR IRRIGATION AND DRAINAGE (IRPID)
Back

After the closure of the erstwhile International Program for Technology Research in Irrigation and Drainage (IPTRID), ICID, realizing the necessity of research and technology transfer needs in the irrigation and drainage sector, conceptualized a research programme implemented through a virtual network of research institutions associated with National Committees of ICID, as approved at the 61st IEC meeting at Yogyakarta on 15 October 2010. Accordingly, two Regional Centres one each in Beijing, China and Tehran, Iran have been hosted by the Chinese National Committee (CNCID) and Iranian National Committee (IRNCID) since 2011 under the rechristened program, titled 'International Research Program for Irrigation and Drainage (IRPID)'.

A China Research and Training Centre of International Programme for Technology and Research in Irrigation and Drainage (IPTRID) was launched at the hands of ICID President Chandra Madramootoo on 12 July 2011 in Beijing. The impressive inaugural function was graced by the presence of PH Aly Shady, Secretary General M. Gopalakrishnan, VP Willem Vlotman (Australia), VP AK Bajaj (India), VPH Karim Shiati Iran), VPH Cai Lingen, VPH Gao Zhanyi (China), Prof. Wang Aiguo, Chairman CNCID, Prof. Li Yangbin, DG of China Irrigation and Drainage Development Center and its staff,  Thierry Facon (FAO), representatives of National Committees of   Canada, Malaysia, Mali, Niger, Nepal, Pakistan, South Africa, and Uzbekistan and all the office bearers gathered here during this occasion, The launch ceremony was held on the occasion of the CNCID-ICID International Workshop on Water Saving Irrigation and Food Security organized during 11- 14 July 2011 with the support of the Ministry of Water Resources, Govt. of China.

The Workshop is a maiden effort following the engagement under ICID's renewed efforts to invigorate the IPTRID, a global programme on Irrigation and Drainage Technology and Research, in tune with the IEC decisions of ICID. The workshop was opened by the Vice minister, Ministry of Water Resources, China Mr. Jiao Yong in the presence of Prof. Jia Jinsheng, President ICOLD In his keynote speech ICID President Madramootoo urged on the need for Global Food Security and the importance for water savings in agriculture which shall drive the future technology and research in the sphere.

In a high-level meeting held with His Excellency Hon'ble Minister for Water Resources Dr. Chen Li, expressed his strong commitment in supporting the ICID and in promoting its mission across the globe.

International Advanced Workshop and Training on Irrigation and Drainage, 21-26 September 2012, Beijing, China

It t is recognized that our inability to use water wisely in agriculture will endanger water security and has the potential to lead to political stability and peace. Evapotranspiration by the crops and evaporation from the field is an actual water loss within irrigation process, which is not hydrologicaly recoverable. Attempts to minimize such water losses through micro-and drip irrigation technologies through improved design and spreading micro-irrigation systems efficiency by incorporating latest research findings need to be accelerated. One of the most significant changes in institutional arrangements in recent years has been the participatory irrigation management movement and the development of water user associations.
These topics were addressed at the “International Advanced Workshop and Training on Irrigation and Drainage” in Beijing, China from 21-26 September 2012 organized by Chinese National Committee on Irrigation and Drainage, the Chinese Research and Training Centre. The workshop was also supported by Ministry of Water Resources, Chinese Irrigation and Drainage Development Centre and China Institution of Water Resources and Hydropower Research (IWHR).

The workshop was attended by about 20 participants from Bangladesh, Cambodia, Nepal, Mali, Turkey, Uzbekistan and China. The participants shared various water saving techniques being adopted in their countries. They also shared the participatory irrigation management practices. Secretary General Avinash Tyagi, Vice Presidents Adama Sangare and VP Huseyin Gundogdu also attended the workshop. The participants had the opportunity to visit the Daxing Irrigation Experimental Station, Shunyi Water Saving Irrigation Trial Field and Dujiangvan Irrigation System, one of the most ancient irrigation systems and the UNESCO World Heritage Site has sustained over more than 2300 years. The participants also attended the 6th Yellow River Forum where a ICID had organized an Irrigation Sub-forum on 26th September.
