(4806) Micro-irrigation, Localized irrigation, Drip irrigation, Trickle irrigation
A method of irrigation whereby water is applied in small but frequent quantities, in such a way as to maintain the most active part of the crop root zone at a quasi-optimum moisture. The irrigation nozzle-lines, close to the crop rows, distribute water either through sheaths, porous or perforated, or plastic pipes of small diameter and thickness, fitted with tiny outlet parts called emitters discharging up to 24 litres/hour at operating pressures generally of 1 bar or less. The space between crop rows generally remains dry. The nozzle-lines or drip lines may be laid on the soil surface, buried within the root zone, or suspended, as on vineyard trellises.
