The Islamic Republic of Iran, with an area of about 1.65 MKm², is situated in the Middle East region of south-western Asia. Iran is one of world’s oldest countries, with its history dating back to almost 5000 years. Iran ranks sixteenth in size among the countries of the world. Iran is one of the world’s most mountainous countries. The mountains also impeded easy access to the Persian Gulf and the Caspian Sea. Totally, 52% of the country is covered by mountains and deserts. The center of Iran consists of several closed basins that collectively are referred to as the Central Plateau. The average elevation of these plateau is about 900 meters.
